[OU] New update/upgrade of Opera ???

Hi,

What the #?!* is going on?

During this past week I had a normal request from
Opera for it to update. I am running Win XP Pro. The
process went well, as always. Then, the fireworks!

I do not have a clue as to what is going on with
Opera. I do not have the menues nor the regular
choices. I have a big "O" at the top left of the
browser, which is partly covered. I cannot even find
some of the things I used to find in previous versions,
like, its showing me the version I am using, or ability
to go to the forums, or look for an update.

When I click the right mouse button, I get a
pop-up menu which includes "appearance." This gives me
a choice to go with "Standard MS Win ..." or with the
Opera stuff. There does not appear to be anything
which easily explains what is going on, except for me
to activate the "Speed Dial" windows to "RTM."

And, that is not all. One of the Web sites to
which I go, suddenly is not appearing correctly. It
apparently uses columns to list choices. The leftmost
column now is not only thinner than how it used to be,
but has the printing broken up. This part of the site
looks fine when using Firefox or IE.

Any ideas? Anyone experience any of this?

Thanks, in advance.

Julian.

To turn the menu bar back on, click on the big red "O" and
select "show menu bar".

If you tell us which site is involved, someone might be able to
tell you what's going on there.

Thanks, it worked great. Glad I did not have to
wade through a manual. Also, the "O" disappears once I
select to have the "Menu Bar." That is somewhat odd, IMHO.

One site in which that narrowing of a column
occurred is pictureview.com. As said, prior versions
of Opera and current versions of Firefox and IE have no
such problems.

While I am at it, when I was on YouTube.com, I
got a request to download the current Flash and
Shockwave. After downloading them, and running them,
Opera still did not seem to have them available.
Again, no problems with Firefox.

Much thanks.

Julian.

It's not that odd, I have come to believe. The big O contains most if
not all of the stuff that's in the Main Menu, I believe.

What I find odd is that on this Asus laptop under Vista HP the big O
is not red but grey...

Thank goodness Katrina has beaten me to it. That means I can just say
my Opera is now better than ever with loads of great features like
Unite and a brilliant search facility that turns the whole page
darker as long as your search string is in it. I too found the
default removal of what is still termed the Main Menu very peculiar,
but at least you now know how to get it back.

Another great innovation is user Javascript files (I say 'innovation'
but maybe they're just new to me!).

And if you type into the url field 'opera:config' you get easy access
to many options.

Harry, I've heard about user JS files for years but have no
understanding of their use or benefits. Where did you go to learn
about them?

Thanks,
Bart

http://unite.opera.com/ leading to
http://unite.opera.com/applications/ , and http://extendopera.org/
(not affiliated to Opera)

I particularly like my UJS Manager (script installer which makes it a
breeze to install new user JS scripts), Google pager (which
automatically adds the next page of Google hits - not recommended if
you are having to pay per MB downloaded! as with an emergency online
dongle thingie), Dynamic image sizer (which automatically sizes a
large image to fit the screen, but also allows you with one click to
see the full-size image, or, with a panorama, first the image to
screen height so that you can scroll horizontally) and Download from
YouTube (whose function I forget... :-)
