[OU] ING Direct - No love for Opera :(

Hey guys,
I am hoping that enough of you will inquire with them about upcoming support for Opera, as I just did :) I think the world's largest *internet* bank should consider supporting over ~150 million Opera users:
"We are unable to assist you with troubleshooting the Opera browser, because it is not a browswer we support."
(The issue I contacted them about: I have to re-enter my "secret questions" every time I log in, does not seem to register the "remember this computer" cookie - even when masking as IE - the rest of the site works fine, and that problem started in Opera after they made some changes a few months ago. Figuring out a way around this issue would be nice, but I just wish I no longer had to hear "we don't support [standard compliant browser X]"...)

.Does the wand not work?

I am afraid I have trouble in taking ING seriously ever since a character in a
Terry Pratchett novel went around saying "ing!!" as a swear word.

I have exactly the same problem with ING. I called them about it some
time ago, but they just gave me the usual crap about my browser settings,
and Opera Premium support didn't help either. But anyway, since they
severely lowered their interest rates I've moved my savings to another
online bank, and so I highly recommend that solution to the problem.

Glad to hear that Jack! I feel less alone... I figured that someone in this list must be using them as well.

ING Direct pays the highest rates I could find (even after they progressively dropped from ~4% to 1.1% currently). If you know of another bank that beats that, especially if they support Opera, I am all in :)

Wow! thanks Jack :) I will look into this (I don't need bill pay or anything, sounds like it fits exactly what I use ING Direct for!) I didn't even know Amex provided that kind of service.

Fingers crossed that they work ok with Opera ;)

Of course, ING have been at pains to make clear that the name should
be pronounced Eye - Enn - Gee, or Ee - Enn - Ghay in Dutch. (gh as in
Van Gogh - oh, never mind! :-)

(Actually, if you're interested, it's like ch in Scottish 'loch' or
gh as in Irish 'lough'. In Dutch, the letter G is pronounced the same
way as gh, so that Vincent van Gogh's name, and indeed that of anyone
else with that surname, e.g. the murdered film maker Theo van Gogh (I
myself knew someone called van Gogh), is pronounced (using 'ch' as in
loch) as 'choch'. It's sort of half-way between h as in 'hot' and c
as in 'cot'. My wife's name was Gemma and my parents learnt (more or
less) to pronounce it by simply adding an H to Emma and trying to
make it sound a bit guttural (this was in the very early 1970s, long,
long before Gemma ('Jemma', sometimes spelt that way) had even been
heard of in the UK - indeed, I like to think it was she who
introduced the name there!). (In case anyone's wondering - I doubt it
- the name Gemma (in Holland, anyway) comes from the RC Saint Gemma Galgani.)

Sorry about all that. It won't happen again (till the next time).

Well, I still use ING Direct checking because they don't charge for
overdrafts on the plastic, and it's only a relatively minor hassle
entering my security info each time I log on; but I transferred almost all
my savings to Amexco. Of course, with any bank, you need to check those
interest rates frequently because they don't notify you when they reduce
them.

I did see their "electric orange" emails over and over again, but Wells Fargo (my main bank) lets me use a credit card I have with them as "overdraft protection", which means that instead of being charged crazy fees, they take the amount needed from the credit card. (Learnt that quite by accident, wish they would publicize it :) But I guess they make most of their butter with consumers from various fees...)

Thanks for the nice discussion, I have added look-into-Amex-savings to my todo list!

All the best,

Charles

Well, I no longer work at Opera support (used to, before they started calling it
"Premium"), but have you tried inspecting the cookies set by this site before
and after a restart? If you go through the log in and check the box to remember
details, then go to your cookie manager (Preferences > Advanced > Cookies >
Cookie manager) and note down the names of the cookies related to the site
(perhaps take a screenshot or something if it's a lot of stuff to write down).

Then restart Opera, don't go to the site but go directly to the cookie manager
and try to figure out what cookies Opera forgot. Perhaps compare with a
different browser on your system if it has a cookie manager? Usually, a server
sets one or more cookies that are meant to be forgotten when the browser is
closed (aka "session cookies") and one or more cookies that should be remembered
across sessions. Seems Opera deletes too many on restart, or simply doesn't keep
them in the first place - if we figure out which ones, we're one step closer to
understanding why.

(Debugging cookie problems on HTTPS connections isn't always a piece of cake
though. Much of the point of HTTPS is after all to make it impossible to see
what's going over the wire.. Best of luck :) )

Thank you for the detailed reply Hallvord - as you predicted, there is a large number of cookies (50%) gone between before and after (new Opera session) - I will have to look into each cookies that are set when I next log in, and try to figure out which is set to remember authentication information, and disregarded later on (which could well be an issue with their JS and not Opera).

Thanks again :)

You're probably on the right track. Unless some of the cookies have really
obvious names, probably the fastest way forward would be comparing with a
different browser at this point. For example, in Firefox you would go to
Preferences > Privacy and find the "delete specific cookies" feature where you
can inspect the cookies without actually deleting any.

(If you see some cookie whose name or value indicates the missing data we can go
straight to trying to figure out where that one is set..)

Still a bit of detective work ahead :)

Hey guys,
I am hoping that enough of you will inquire with them about upcoming
support for Opera, as I just did :) I think the world's largest
"We are unable to assist you with troubleshooting the Opera browser,
because it is not a browswer we support."
(The issue I contacted them about: I have to re-enter my "secret
questions" every time I log in, does not seem to register the
"remember this computer" cookie - even when masking as IE - the rest
of the site works fine, and that problem started in Opera after they
made some changes a few months ago. Figuring out a way around this
issue would be nice, but I just wish I no longer had to hear "we
don't support [standard compliant browser X]"...)
Where is ING Direct located? I have an ING a/c - albeit ex-Postbank,
so there may be some differences - and everything works fine. My
recent experience is that there are sites which used to accept Opera
only if I masked or ID'd as something else but which now only accept
Opera if I leave it IDing as Opera.

You can at least point out that in Holland ING appears to accept
Opera. As indeed do my main bank (Rabo), Visa and Barclays.

Cheers,

Harry

Hey Harry,

Sorry for the mixup: ING Direct is an independent subsidiary of the big ING Dutch bank (internet-only subsidiary <-> higher interest rates), and their website is different: [http://www.ingdirect.com] www.ingdirect.com

Step 1 - Once you are a customer, you have to enter your acct #, and the browser optionally remembers it (so far, so good, even with Opera)

Step 2 - If ING Direct recognizes that you are coming back, it lets you click in your access code (that part works with Opera), and if it does not recognizes your previous visits, it asks you a series of security questions - after which you can check a checkbox to make them remember you on that computer. This is the part that doesn't work: every single time, I have to answer some security questions (does not work with Wand, since these are not password fields, just plain text fields).

My guess is either JavaScript issue and/or cookie handling. Hopefully if enough people email them about Opera issues, they'll fix them :|

Hope the (lengthy) explanations made sense!

Charles

Perfect sense. Clearly the ING's left hand is unaware of what its
right hand has been doing for months...

I expect someone is enjoying the first fruits of his massive bonus as
we speak! (It only occurs to me now that we never hear about women
taking home massive bonuses. Is this because they don't get any, or
because they're better at keeping mum about them...?)

The wand doesn't work in that case, unfortunately, because these are plain text fields.

.Does the wand not work?

I am afraid I have trouble in taking ING seriously ever since a character in a
Terry Pratchett novel went around saying "ing!!" as a swear word.

I have a different problem with using online banking.  I have no
problem logging in or even using the wand but sometime back during one of
the bank's web update of their site the calendar feature on when you want
to pay a certain bill no longer works.  You can pay for that day but you
can't pull the drop down on the calendar or even type in a different
date.  If one goes in using IE the calendar works.  (Masking as IE does
not change this feature.)  I thought maybe with some of the updated
versions that this problem might be alleviated.  But it hasn't.  I
realise that they probably only test their site using only certain
browers.  I figured if I reported this problem to the bank they would
probably give me the same reply about being a "non-compliant
browser"--whatever that might be?

Hey guys,

I am hoping that enough of you will inquire with them about upcoming
support for Opera, as I just did :) I think the world's
largest *internet* bank should consider supporting over ~150 million
Opera users:

"We are unable to assist you with troubleshooting the Opera browser,
because it is not a browswer we support."

(The issue I contacted them about: I have to re-enter my "secret
questions" every time I log in, does not seem to register the

of the site works fine, and that problem started in Opera after they
made some changes a few months ago. Figuring out a way around this
