Post by R NI'm running Opera 9.62.
Lots and lots of bookmarks, notes, widgets, and all the settings the
way I like 'em.
but I'm wanting to upgrade to the most recent release (10.50 isn't it?).
I know I can save and/or move the bookmarks, notes, other files
(done it before).
Will upgrading OVER my current installation 'convert' anything, that
would make it difficult to go back to 9.62 if I'm not happy with the upgrade?
I know I can put it in a new folder and do it as a new installation,
but I really don't want that. One 'puter I had about 7 differernt
Opera installations, and don't want to do that again.
So will upgrading make it impossible to go back?
I really do not think there is much chance that you will not like
your new Opera. As I write this, I am still running 10.10 on my
laptop, but I have installed 10.50 on my netbook. 10.10 was easily
the best Opera so far, really a big advance on 9.6x in my experience
- so that even if I had had to fiddle about to get things right, it
would have been worth it. One of the really great things about 10.10
and 10.50 is the automatic synchronization of bookmarks between your
various computers (of course, I don't know if you use more than one).
Yesterday my girlfriend wanted to send me a message on my laptop, but
she received a message to say it was offline - but my netbook wasn't,
so why not send her message to that!? Fantastic. I am sure you will
love Opera Unite, and there are some great user Javascript
applications you can install (first of all, take the User JS
installer app, which makes installing any further UJS apps an
absolute doddle), either from the Opera site or from
http://extendopera.org/ . My favourites are the Google pager, which
automatically loads the next page of Google hits when your scrolling
reaches the bottom of the page, and the dynamic image sizer, which
automatically resizes images to fit the screen but allows you to
single-click for the full-size image or double-click for vertical
fitting, great for looking at panoramas as if you were turningn your
head, rather than as a single image. None of these things are avialble on 9.6x.
One thing I found very odd about 10.50 was that by default the main
menu was not installed. Maybe this is because the program knew I was
running it on a small-screen computer (1024 x 600 instead of 768, so
one can see the logic of saving a bit of height), but not installing
the main menu seems very odd to me, especially as I could find no
reference to how to install it. Eventually someone on the Developers
Blog pointed the way.
So why haven't I installed 10.50 on my latpop? Just because I first
want to be sure it works OK on the netbook. At present I am working
(i.e. doing my job as a translator) on the laptop, so I really don't
want anything going wrong. (Not that correct running on one
necessarily means correct running on the other, of course...) And of
course when I get home I shall be installing it on my desktop computer too.
